Upotreba tehnika kulture in vitro povećava mogućnosti prikupljanja, ex situ čuvanja i razmjene biljnih vrsta koje tvore kratkoživuće sjeme kao i vegetativno propagirajućih vrsta. ln vitro tehnike čuvanja, u koje ubrajamo održavanje kultura usporenim rastom (srednjerodno čuvanje) i krioprezervaciju (dugorodno čuvanje) pružaju veliku prednost u čuvanje takvih problematičnih vrsta.
