Defined by their notational residue and connection to the Florentine Camerata, the solo songs of Giulio Caccini have functioned in style history as expected agents of instability and transition toward the early Baroque. However, Caccini¹s professional identity as a courtier/singer was more oriented toward the past, in reference to the secretive embodied rituals of the court chamber. Through his use of language, Caccini attempts to join the meritorious virtuosity of the professional and inborn virtù of the nobileman into one body, providing a window onto the tension between the past and future of the Italian court culture expressed through an anxious re-emphasis of oral traditional forms.
