Scholarship on Italian monody has asserted that the solo madrigal tradition was almost non-existent in Venice, and that Venetian solo arias blossomed only in the 1620s, due in large part to the example of Alessandro Grandi. Evidence of three monody composers previously unknown to have been working at San Marco in Venice during the 1610s (Eleuterio Guazzi, Flaminio Corradi, and Bartolomeo Barbarino), however, adds significantly to the number of acknowledged Venetian monodies, and it dramatically alters the ratio of solo madrigal to solo aria, establishing an earlier date for the first known examples of Venetian monody.
