International audienceThe purpose of this paper is to show that heritage is a dynamic and continuously evolving notion inseparable from the process of heritagization which gives rise to it. Cultural and natural heritage have each been addressed as separate entities while emphasizing the connections between them. The heritagization of culture in the western world is dealt with by evolving public policies which frame its administrative and legal dimensions. The paper then examines how this process of heritagization is set in motion by the range of different people involved, concerted action and cultural claims.
