The Use Of Impoliteness Strategies In Marriage Story Movie Transcript

This research investigate the use of impoliteness strategies in Marriage Story movie transcript using pragmatic approach and the theory by Jonathan Culpeper. This research aims are describing the types of impoliteness strategies that are found in the movie transcript and identifying how the characters response to the impoliteness strategy attacked to them. This research method is descriptive qualitative method. The data used to analyse this research is movie transcript of Marriage Story. There are all types of impoliteness strategies found in the movie transcript. They are bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock politeness and withhold politeness. The total data found in the movie are 88 data, which the 44 data will be deeply analysed by the researcher. Positive impoliteness strategy becomes the most frequently used type of impoliteness strategy while sarcasm or mock politeness is the least strategy that occur in this research. In Marriage Story, countering face attack by defensive face attack strategy is the most frequently used response by the characters. The characters choose to use this response because they tend to defend their faces from the face attack.132 hlm
