GENDER DISCRIMINATION IN 19TH CENTURY IN THE FILM OF LITTLE WOMEN BY GILLIAN ARMSTRONG

This thesis analyzes gender discrimination in the 19th century in the film of Little Women by Gillian Armstrong. Little women tells the story of family life who lived in wartime in America. In this thesis the writer want to see gender descrimination in 19th century toward female charcter in March Family. The purpose of this research is first, to find out kinds of gender discrimination experienced by female characters. Second, to know why discrimination could happen in the film. Third, to find out how do the female charcters struggle to rebel themselves from gender discrimination in the film. This research uses a historical approach and feminist theory. The method used is qualitative descriptive method to analyze data in this thesis. The source of the data was taken from dialogues and scenes in the film Little Women by Gillian Armstrong. The findings in this research are first, kinds of gender discrimination that occur in Little Women films are discrimination in society, discrimination in education, discrimination in employment and discrimination in politics. Second the discrimination can occur in this film when a father goes to war and leaves the family at that time women should not go to war and the nature of women at home or domestically. Third, the way female characters struggle to rebel themselves from gender discrimination are struggle in social life, struggle in education and struggle employment
