Mercy and mercifulness is a theme one can find throughout the whole of the Holy Scripture. In the Old Testament three terms are foundational for the topic: rahamim (deep and profound love up to the entrails), hesed (magnanimity/mindfulness), and hen (care, grace, favor). In the Greek text of Septuaginta and in the New Testament the corresponding words are: splanchna, agape/eleósis (love, compassion), and oiktirmós (piety). They draw the broad and fundamental picture with which is seen and revealedGod’s action and Jesus’ gestures.
