A secularização da sociedade portuguesa no contexto das modernidades múltiplas

The concept of secularisation is far from unanimous and uncontested. In the current debate on the theme, three aspects would seem to stand out: that of differentiation between the secular sphere and the sphere of religious institutions and norms, that of the decline of the religious as belief and practice, and that of the privatisation of the religious. An analysis of the debate and of the great diversity of situations regarding the presence of religion in modern life points to the need for a complex analysis. The same applies to modernity, or rather various modernities, as would seem to be more applicable nowadays. This text constitutes a reflection on the viability of applying certain theories on secularisation to the Portuguese reality, taking as a point of departure certain data from the study on “Religious identities in Portugal: representations, values and practices”. It concludes that Portuguese society may be considered secularised in certain respects, but not in all, which would seem to confirm the thesis of the existence of multiple modernities.O conceito de secularização está longe de ser unívoco e incontestado. No debate em curso sobre o tema, parecem destacar-se três vertentes: a da diferenciação entre a esfera secular e a esfera das instituições e normas religiosas, a do declínio do religioso enquanto crença e práticas e a da privatização do religioso. A análise do debate e da grande diversidade de situações no que diz respeito à presença da religião na vida moderna aponta para a necessidade de uma análise complexa. O mesmo se passa com a modernidade, parecendo ser, hoje, mais correto falar de várias modernidades. Este texto constitui uma reflexão acerca da viabilidade de aplicar algumas das teorias da secularização à realidade portuguesa, a partir da análise de alguns dos dados do estudo sobre «Identidades religiosas em Portugal: representações, valores e práticas». Conclui-se que a sociedade portuguesa pode ser considerada secularizada nalguns aspetos, mas não em todos, o que parece confirmar a tese da existência de modernidades múltiplas
