Des usines aux pavillons : Banalisation résidentielle et estompe des héritages industriels dans le quartier Terrenoire à Saint-Étienne (France)

Cet article analyse les recompositions d’un territoire précocement industrialisé, confronté aux changements socio-économiques et aux processus de dévalorisation qu’ils induisent. Le quartier Terrenoire, ancienne commune indépendante fusionnée avec Saint-Étienne en 1969, offre à l’analyse une situation territoriale singulière. La relative réussite de la reconversion résidentielle du quartier ne peut escamoter la profonde fragmentation d’un quartier-archipel, qui reste en attente d’un projet urbain à même de redonner du sens à un territoire pris entre l’utopie d’une « campagne industrielle » et celle de la banalisation et de l’éclatement d’une périphérie. À partir de l’analyse des changements sociospatiaux et du recueil des représentations habitantes associées à ces derniers, nous montrons l’existence de mémoires divergentes qui participent à cette fragmentation sociospatiale, dans un contexte global marqué par l’oubli de la ville industrielle.This article aims to analyze the restructuring of a precociously industrialized territory that has been facing socioeconomic changes and the processes of devaluation induced by such changes. The district of Terrenoire, which was independent until it merged with the City of Saint-Étienne in 1969, went through several industrial restructurings until the late 1990s, but still retains a strong legacy of an urban landscape shaped by industrialization. The relatively successful conversion of Terrenoire into a residential area cannot conceal the deep fragmentation of the neighbourhood. Between the utopia of an industrial countryside and the trivialization of an urban periphery, the district needs a project that can give a renewed meaning to its territory. Our analysis of the socio-spatial representations of Terrenoire residents, within the global context of vanishing industrial landscapes, shows the existence of divergent memories that contribute to local fragmentation.En este artículo presentamos el análisis de las transformaciones de un territorio prematuramente industrializado, el que confronta cambios socioeconómicos y procesos inducidos de devaluación. El barrio Terrenoire, antigua comuna independiente fusionada a Saint-Etienne en 1969, permite analizar una situación territorial particular. El éxito relativo de la transformación residencial del barrio no logra escamotear la profunda fragmentación de un barrio-archipiélago, en espera de un proyecto urbano capaz de dar sentido a un territorio incrustado entre la utopía de una “publicidad industrial”, la de banalización y la de desintegración de una periferia. Teniendo en cuenta del análisis de los cambios socio-espaciales y de las representaciones de los habitantes que les están asociados, mostramos la presencia de memorias discordantes que participan a esta fragmentación socio-espacial, en un contexto global afectado por la indiferencia de la ciudad industrial
