The composition of organisms in the interstitial depends on various abiotic factors of the habitat, e.g. grain size, water content and depth of the oxidationhorizon in the sediment. In this study, we compared the presence and abundance of selected organisms in the intertidal estuarine mudflat and the tidal sand flat. The study took place on the island Sylt at the Alfred-Wegener-Institut in List. The results show that there is a clear difference between the two habitats. In the sediment of the tidal sand flat we could observe a larger total number of organisms than in the estuarine mudfat.
