Soils play a fundamental role in many ecological processes and in the provision of a multitude of vital ecosystem services not only in natural/semi-natural ecosystems but also in disturbed urban milieus. As many soil-derived ecosystem services are closely linked to human health and climate change, it is important to acknowledge the ability of urban soils to provide ecosystem services in the context of rapid urbanisation.
