Vg.1 elevar sine prestasjonar og vanskar i algebra og funksjonar

In the national curriculum, The Knowledge Promotion 2006, the curriculum for Mathematics consists of the same core subjects from 1st grade to level 1 in general studies (VG1). It consists of four main subject areas and competence aims after 2nd, 4th, 7th and 10th grade. This means that the syllabus for upper secondary level 1 (VG1) is based upon the competence aims after 10th grade. As a teacher in Mathematics at the upper secondary level, I have observed that many pupils are not able to achieve what is expected from them, based on the competence aims after 10th grade. I have observed this especially in the subject areas of algebra and functions. The aim of this master thesis is to find out how VG1 pupils´ achievements in algebra and functions correspond with the competence aims after 10th grade. What are the reasons for possible difficulties and what can be done to prevent the pupils´ difficulties within these subject areas. This resulted in these two problem statements: 1. How do the VG1 pupils´ achievements in algebra and functions at the upper secondary in Sogndal correspond with LK 06´s competence aims after 10th grade? 2. What are the reasons for the pupils' difficulties in algebra and functions, and what can be done to prevent them? To examine the first problem statement, I found valuable information in the results of the mapping test in Mathematics for pupils at the upper secondary school in Sogndal. I collected, systematised and analysed data from the mapping test for more than 330 pupils. The data covered many, but not all of the competence aims in algebra and functions after 10th grade. That is the reason why the results will be presented with the belonging competence aim. The quantitative part of my examination indicates that VG1 pupils´ achievements in algebra and functions do not correspond with the competence aims after 10th grade in LK 06. To examine the second problem statement, I have examined prior researches and literature in the field. I have focused on what kind of misconceptions the pupils have in connection with algebra and functions. These misconceptions can arise in different levels and of various reasons, but they can be prevented if one is privy to what causes them, when teaching Mathematics. In this master thesis I examine the most common misconceptions in the subject of algebra and functions and how to prevent these. I will also discuss a few other possible reasons why the pupils are having difficulties within these subjects.Læreplanen i matematikk fellesfag er gjennomgåande, frå 1. årssteg og ut Vg.1. Faget er delt inn i hovudområder med kompetansemål etter 2., 4., 7., og 10. årssteg. Dermed byggjer matematikkpensum for Vg.1 på kompetansemåla i faget etter 10. årssteg. Som matematikklærar i den vidaregåande skulen, har eg observert at mange elevar ikkje presterer i tråd med det ein kan forvente ut i frå desse kompetansemåla. Særleg har eg sett dette innan hovudområda algebra og funksjonar. Målet med denne oppgåva var å finne ut meir om korleis Vg.1 elevane sine prestasjonar i algebra og funksjonar samsvarar med kompetansemåla etter 10. årssteg, kva som kan vere årsakene til eventuelle vanskar, og kva som kan gjerast for å førebyggje elevane sine vanskar innan desse temaa. Eg fekk då desse to problemstillingane: 1. Korleis samsvarar Vg.1 elevane på Sogndal vidaregåande skule sine prestasjonar i algebra og funksjonar, med læreplanen (LK06) sine kompetansemål i desse tema etter 10.årssteg? 2. Kva kan vere årsakene til elevar sine vanskar med algebra og funksjonar, og kva kan gjerast for å førebyggje dei? For å undersøkje problemstilling 1, nytta eg meg av resultata frå kartleggingsprøvane til Vg.1 elevar ved Sogndal vidaregåande skule. Eg samla inn, systematiserte og analyserte data frå kartleggingsprøvane til over 330 elevar. Datamaterialet mitt dekka mange, men ikkje samtlege, kompetansemål i algebra og funksjonar etter 10. årssteg. Og resultata vert derfor presentert under tilhøyrande kompetansemål. Den kvantitative delen av undersøkingane mi viser at Vg.1 elevane sine prestasjonar innan temaa algebra og funksjonar ikkje samsvarar med kompetansemåla etter 10. trinn i LK06. For å undersøkje problemstilling 2 har eg sett meg inn i tidlegare forsking og litteratur om emnet. Eg har særleg sett meg inn i kva misoppfatningar elevane kan ha i samband med temaa algebra og funksjonar. Misoppfatningar kan oppstå på ulike nivå og av ulike grunnar, men kan førebyggjast dersom ein er medviten om kva som kan utløyse dei, når ein underviser i matematikk. I oppgåva tek eg for meg dei mest vanlege misoppfatningane innan temaa algebra og funksjonar, og korleis ein kan førebyggje desse. I tillegg kjem eg inn på nokre andre mulege årsaker til at elevane har vanskar innan desse temaa.Master i Læring og undervisningUND350MAPS-UN
