Las tribulaciones de un emprendedor en España y en el Río de la Plata. Emilio Reus Bahamonde (1858-1891)

This article relates the business career of a Spanish entrepreneur in South America during the whole decade of the 1880s. Emilio Reus’ projects reveal the presence of Spanish investors in Latin America during the first globalization, the importance of company capital to the triumph of Spanish business in that continent, and the enormous cost – in terms of a loss of entrepreneurs – that the Spanish Republican exile to America in the 19th century represented. Additionally, the text offers useful financial and fixed capital investment details for Argentina, Uruguay and Bolivia, which illustrate their economic splendour before the 1890 crash.En este trabajo relato la trayectoria empresarial de un emprendedor español en Sudamé­rica durante toda la década de 1880. Los proyectos de Emilio Reus desvelan la presencia de inversores españoles en América Latina durante la primera globalización, la importancia del capital social en el triunfo en los negocios de los españoles en ese continente y el enorme cos­te, en términos de pérdida de emprendedores, que supuso el exilio republicano español a Amé­rica en el siglo xix. Esas son las tesis que sostengo. Adicionalmente, en el texto se detallan in­versiones financieras y en capital fijo social en Argentina, Uruguay y Bolivia que ilustran su esplendor económico antes del crash de 1890
