This article relates the business career of a Spanish entrepreneur in South America during the whole decade of the 1880s. Emilio Reus’ projects reveal the presence of Spanish investors in Latin America during the first globalization, the importance of company capital to the triumph of Spanish business in that continent, and the enormous cost – in terms of a loss of entrepreneurs – that the Spanish Republican exile to America in the 19th century represented.
