Emotions and level of stress in speakers can often be perceived by sound of voice, which is an integral part of successful communication. Regardless of age, people with audible voice disorders are judged more negatively by the listener in terms of attractiveness or reliability the more dysphonic they sound. In addition, people with voice disorders exhibit more stress symptoms and dysfunctional coping strategies than those with healthy voices. Further studies are necessary to clarify whether the observed differences are the consequence or cause of a voice disorder.
