The Challenges of Globalization to Music Education

Globalization had overtaken the world system in the last few decades. It has made the world smaller as people and market becomes more accessible to one another. Individuals had become affected not just by their local community, but, by economic, political, and cultural processes or forces that operate worldwide. In music, American and European pop-culture in addition to diminutive movies, dress fad, western styled beds, toilets, showers and restaurants, had overtaken or subsumed Nigerian Music. A closer look at the wealth of resources in Nigeria music shows clearly that, it is sociologically and aesthetically dishonest to assume that any other cultural area or time has an obligation to transplant the musical power, or spirit, or quality from Europe (Dominique-Rene, 1974. This paper submits that “great masters” of European music rose up from their cultural milieu to give impetus to ideals present in the concepts of the time they lived. It amounts to cultural racism to continually utilize Western music yardsticks as the platform upon which Nigerian music must should be established or evacuated. This paper exposes the wealth of music education resources available in Nigeria and propounds a sketchy model of systematized music education that is home grown. The abundance of resources is adequate to give impetus to a full-scale body of knowledge hat is fully Nigerian. With conscientious implementation and propagation, Nigeria music has the capacity to develop global perspective
