Staff training and development, enhancement of job performance: Case of Federal University of Technology Library, Owerri

The success of any organization/institution lies on the ability of its workforce to deliver. This ability/skill is acquired through training, which enhances job performance. In essence, the research examined the training and development programmes enjoyed by all senior staff of FUTO library with the aim of finding out its effects on the staff. Fifty self-designed questionnaire were distributed to the sampled staff. 43 (86%) response rates were recorded. Data obtained were collated and analysed using frequency tables, percentages and graphs. The result showed that FUTO library staff enjoyed induction and orientation training (IOT) and on the job training (OJT) more than any other kind of training. It also showed that library management sponsored almost all the training and development programmes done within the library while the ones outside were either sponsored by the library management or by staff members. The result also revealed that training and staff development enhance job performance as majority of the respondents affirmed that they performed above average after training. It was also discovered that the major constraints to staff training and development were inadequate provision of fund by the university authority to the library management as well as inadequate fund by staff to sponsor self and inadequate knowledge of the training programmes. Based on the findings made, recommendations were drawn with the sole aim of improving staff training and development to enhance job productivity
