It is widely recognised that the world is under threat from human activities, which will have a huge impact on future lives. This threat can be addressed in a number of ways, for example through mass media, awareness-raising and activism, as well as via the more formal education system (Juniper, 2011). However, as Dioum exhorted in 1968, “In the end we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught”. I find the emphasis on teaching particularly astute and have used this quote within my practical, pedagogical and academic work for two decades.
