Appartenances linguistiques et identités collectives en Pays Basque : retour sur une enquete

International audienceThis article goes back to an investigation undertaken in 2004-2005 in the French Basque country within the Basque Autonomous Community and in Navarra around the following themes : Identity and Basque culture at the beginning of the 21st Century. The investigation, the conditions in which it was produced, and its reception can lead to a two-level analysis. The first concerns the results themselves, which confirm the territorial fragmentation of Basque-Navarrian territories. The second level of analysis concerns the applied methodology : how to measure ethno-linguistic identities ? Are the quantitative methods relevant, even when balanced by discussion groups ? How to single out political dimensions within representations ? These indicators can be only understood by taking into account the contrasts between collective mobilisations and the degree of institutionalisation of linguistic and cultural policies within each of these three territories. The current evolving situation of the French Basque country will illustrate this debate.Ce texte revient sur une enquête menée en 2004-2005 en Pays Basque français, dans la Communauté autonome basque et en Navarre autour du thème Identité et culture basque au début du XXIe siècle. L'enquête, les conditions de sa production et de sa réception peuvent faire l'objet de deux niveaux de lecture. La première est celle des résultats proprement dits, qui viennent confirmer la fragmentation territoriale des territoires basco-navarrais. Le second niveau de lecture est d'ordre méthodologique : comment mesurer les identités ethnolinguistiques ? Quelle pertinence des approches quantitatives, même rééquilibrées par des groupes de discussion ? Comment repérer les dimensions proprement politiques des représentations ? Ces données ne prennent sens qu'au regard des contrastes entre les mobilisations collectives et du degré d'institutionnalisation des politiques linguistiques et culturelles sur chacun des trois territoires. La situation d'un Pays Basque français en mutation viendra illustrer ce débat
