On the Epistemology of Narrative Theory : Narratology and Other Theories of Fictional Narrative

International audienceThis article is made up of two talks presented in French and English, at two conferences : a symposium organized by Matti Hyvärinen and Kai Mikkonen, at Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies at the University of Helsinki, and a series of conferences which I organized at Paris 7-Denis Diderot University. The title, which is borrowed from Marc Dominicy's work on Jakobsonian poetics, sets out to analyze narrative theory from an epistemological viewpoint. On the one hand, I focus on Genette's narratology as it is presented in "Discours du récit", Figures III and Nouveau discours du récit (I also take into account René Rivara's attempt in La Langue du récit to give narratology a linguistic base, using enunciative linguistics). On the other hand I explore what I call, following S.-Y. Kuroda's cue, "non-communicational" theories of fictional narrative, of which Ann Banfield has developed the most formalized version. In spite of their very unequal popularity, I consider these theories as objective, which is to say, debatable and capable of being the object of a rational critique. Moreover, it is a matter of choosing between the two. The analysis is developed in three parts. The first concerns the object of narrative theory, in other words, the narrative as a constructed object, both in narratology (where the narrative is likened to a narrative discourse and attributed, in the case of fictional narrative, to a fictive narrator) and in Käte Hamburger's narrative theory (where the fictional narrative and discourse are mutually exclusive categories): this part poses the problem of the encounter between a theoretic object, defined by a certain number of properties and historical or empirical factors (notably those which deal with the distinction between "first person" narrative and "third person narrative"). The second part of the article examines whether or not the theory's assertions lend themselves to falsification. I consider in particular Gérard Genette's assertion, according to which "all narrative is, explicitly or not, in the first person, because its narrator can at any moment designate himself by the pronoun I", in light of Ann Banfield's theory of narrative and free indirect speech (free indirect speech as Ann Banfield defines it constituting a singular case of observation that falsifies the hypothesis of Genette and narratology). The third part of the article concerns the "reductionism" of narrative theory (or the way in which the theory's assertions are reducible to another level, in this case the linguistic level). Leaving aside Genette's narratology which never took interest in the "language of narrative", this part considers, successively, Rivara's enunciative narratology and Ann Banfield's theory of narrative and free indirect speech. This part shows that Rivara's program of enunciative narratology is based on a series of reductions that are difficult to justify and which leave room for real contradictions (in particular concerning the status of the "omniscient" narrator). It also shows that the assertion by Ann Banfield according to which the behavior of elements and constructions characteristic of free indirect speech, considered as a sub-category of narrative style, is part of the language and is capable of being formalized in the grammar of this language. It shows as well how Ann Banfield's assertion that the behavior of elements and characteristic constructions of free indirect speech, considered as a sub-category of narrative style, is part of language and can be formalized in the grammar of this language, this assertion is inseparable from the elaboration of "another grammar", which is to say, another conception of language. The conclusion proposes that the relation between the theory and the analysis of fictional narratives be reconsidered.Cet article constitue le texte augmenté de deux communications, prononcées respectivement en français et en anglais, dans le cadre de deux colloque et journées d'études : un colloque organisé par Matti Hyvärinen et Kai Mikkonen, au Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies de l'Université d'Helsinki, deux journées d'étude organisées par mes soins à l'Université Paris 7-Denis Diderot. Le titre, démarqué de celui d'un article de Marc Dominicy sur la poétique jakobsonienne, exprime la volonté d'analyser la théorie narrative d'un point de vue épistémologique. Je m'appuie, d'une part, sur la narratologie genettienne, telle qu'elle est présentée dans "Discours du récit", Figures III et Nouveau discours du récit (je tiens compte également de la tentative de René Rivara dans La Langue du récit pour donner à la narratologie une base linguistique, à partir des travaux de la linguistique énonciative), d'autre part, sur ce que j'appelle, à la suite de S.-Y. Kuroda, les théories "non communicationnelles" du récit de fiction, dont Ann Banfield a donné la version la plus formalisée. En dépit de leur popularité très inégale, je considère ces théories comme des théories objectives, c'est-à-dire discutables, pouvant faire l'objet d'une critique rationnelle, et entre lesquelles il s'agit de faire un choix. L'analyse se développe en trois parties. La première concerne l'objet de la théorie narrative, autrement dit le récit comme objet construit, aussi bien dans la narratologie (où le récit est assimilé à un discours narratif et attribué, dans le cas du récit de fiction, à un narrateur fictif) que dans la théorie narrative de Käte Hamburger (où le récit de fiction et le discours sont des catégories mutuellement exclusives) : cette partie pose le problème de la rencontre entre un objet théorique, défini par un certain nombre de propriétés, et des données empiriques ou historiques (notamment celles qui tournent autour de la distinction entre récits "à la première" et "à la troisième personne"). La deuxième partie de l'article s'intéresse à la façon dont les affirmations de la théorie se prêtent ou non à la falsification. J'envisage notamment l'affirmation de Gérard Genette, selon laquelle "tout récit est, explicitement ou non, "à la première personne", puisque son narrateur peut à tout moment se désigner lui-même par ledit pronom", à la lumière de la théorie du récit et du style indirect libre d'Ann Banfield (le style indirect libre tel qu'Ann Banfield le définit constituant un cas d'observation singulier qui falsifie l'hypothèse de Genette et de la narratologie). La troisième partie de l'article concerne le "réductionnisme" de la théorie narrative (ou la façon dont les affirmations de la théorie sont réductibles à un autre niveau, en l'occurrence le niveau linguistique). Laissant de côté la narratologie genettienne, qui ne s'est jamais intéressée à la "langue du récit", cette partie envisage successivement la narratologie énonciative de Rivara et la théorie du récit et du style indirect libre d'Ann Banfield ; elle montre que le programme de la narratologie énonciative de Rivara repose sur une série de réductions peu ou mal justifiées et qu'il laisse apparaître de réelles contradictions (concernant notamment le statut du narrateur "omniscient"). Elle montre aussi que l'affirmation d'Ann Banfield selon laquelle le comportement des éléments et des constructions caractéristiques du style indirect libre, considéré comme une sous-catégorie du style narratif, fait partie de la langue et est formalisable dans la grammaire de cette langue est inséparable de l'élaboration d'une "autre grammaire", c'est-à-dire d'une autre conception de la langue. La conclusion invite à reconsidérer les rapports entre la théorie et l'analyse des récits de fiction
