Reminiscence of John Muir by Hodgson, Miss Kittie

[California] Dear Sir Your letter was received some weeks ago, and am sorry it has remained unanswered so long, but I have been sick since the 10th of Feb & have not been able to look over my mother’s letters till of late. I have looked over all of mother’s letters but failed to find any from Mr. Muir. Some years ago we were burned out & lost nearly every thing, we had, I guess his letters were burned also, as I know she always kept letter from her friends. Mr. Muir use to write my mother where he returned from his tramp (as he called them) up the mountains & send little pressed flowers that he found on the mountain sides, knowing her love for flowers. I was quite a little girl when he was at our home at Cedar Keys, but I will tell you all I know about it. He went to C. K. to take a boat for Cuba or Central A, that was loading with lumber. While he was waiting for boat to sail he was taken down with typhoid fever. My oldest Bro who was about Mr. Muir’s age, got acquainted & quite a friendship was formed & through my Bro, he was brought to our home for my mother to nurse, which she did, but at one time it looked as if the end was very near. He near as I can remember he was at our home about 3 or 4 months. I gave your letters to my Bro that is older than I, & it may be he can tell you more than I can. I am very sorry I am not able to give you the information you wish. Hoping you well forgive my seeming neglect in not answering sooner, I am. Very Respectfully Miss Kittie Hodgso
