Pacific Grove, Calif.July 3d 1911My dear Brother John:I have been slow in writing but until about two days ago I did not know where to address you. We were much dissapointed in not seeing you while in Los Angeles. I might have written beforehand but decided on the trip on such short notice.Mrs Foster and her daughters family live on a Ranche some miles out from the City, but the first time we went there Anna and Kenneth looked up the Hooker Building leaving me at the Chamber of Commerce while they were finding out. (You see my last letter from you was sent from that place I inferred from the envelope) The gentleman they saw there told them you had started on your trip east also that Mr Hooker had just gone out a few minutes before. They got Mr Hooker\u27s telephone number and after going back to the Ranche called him up when he kindly spoke of your being in Washington and other places also mentioned your intended trip05065 2to South America, but seemed to hope that you might give that part up.I had a letter from Helen last week, she was telling me of her baby, also that she was going to Bear Valley in the San Bernardino range where they intend to spend the rest of the summer as the extreme heat was too trying for both her and the little one.I wrote to Wanda but have not heard from her for some time. Helen mentioned your having received the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters, from Yale. You must have a number of honorary degrees now, but John that seems a very long, and I should think a difficult trip for you to be starting out on now, and it must be very hot and trying too. Are you going alone or is there a party? I have been thinking so much about you and I pray that you may be kept and blest in your work.We read your articles in the Atlantic Monthly entitled My first Summer in the Sierra, It was very interesting and brought back old times when you wrote home so much of it in those early days and all was so eagerly looked for and enjoyed by each one of us. I have so many05065 3of the old letters still.My last letter from Mary was written from Cleveland, Ohio. She is with one of her old friends and is very busy making new pictures she is intending to visit Niagara Falls before returning home. I had letters from Joanna and Bernice very lately she is still with Dan. Bernice is still suffering from the effects of malaria but is much better than she has been.We are looking forward with pleasure to a visit from Grace this summer. she intended starting about the end of June but was going to Portland first to visit Cecelia.Kenneth did not come home to spend vacation. Mr. Guidinger needed him, so he is at work there. We here are all about usually well. Ette is not very strong, but by being careful keeps aboutIt is already a year past since Maggie left us, I heard from John, he misses her sadly but keeps busy and the time passes.
