Linking Malis textile expressivity and contemporary history from creations and pathways of Abdou Ouologuem, Aminata and Aissatan Tolo and Ladji Barry

Esta pesquisa se volta para as obras de quatro artistas conhecidos durante viagem da pesquisadora ao Mali no início do ano de 2017: as irmãs Aminata e Aissatan Tolo, Abdou Ouologuem e Ladji Barry, cujas produções se articulam pela manufatura sobre o tecido de algodão, suporte de base de seus trabalhos. As irmãs Tolo, instaladas em Bamako, capital do Mali, bordam sobre o pano índigo formas que remetem a valores de sua sociedade de origem, dogon. Abdou esculpe máscaras-vestimentas-telas a partir de volumes preenchidos de fios de algodão, técnica conhecida como gaufrage que atribui a um conhecimento ancestral da população Tellem. Ladji pinta, com pigmentos naturais medicinais da região, telas sobre as quais acrescenta volumes e bordados com elementos que remetem ao universo rural dos caçadores, combinados com materiais atrelados ao estrangeiro e industrial. Combinando uma leitura formal a partir dos materiais e formas presentes nas obras com as entrevistas realizadas com seus produtores e informações sobre a história cultural da região, esta pesquisa busca oferecer uma interpretação do conjunto das obras. Para isso, se volta para a trajetória do cultivo e processamento do algodão, para a circulação e apropriação do tecido industrial wax como identidade cultural, para a produção do bogolan, tecido manual estampado com pigmentos naturais que se tornou símbolo da arte têxtil nacional. A fim de compreender os espaços de atuação de cada artista dentro do cenário de produção de arte malinês e suas possíveis categorizações e hierarquizações, apoio-me no debate de Karin Barber sobre As artes populares em África, assim como na pesquisa disponibilizada neste documento sobre a institucionalização dos saberes em território malinês a partir de um sistema colonial. Para discutir as condições de reconhecimento da produção destes artistas no sistema de arte global, trago as críticas sobretudo do filósofo camaronês Achile Mbembe e do antropólogo Alfred Gell.The research turns to the work of four well-known artists during a trip to Mali at the beginning of 2017: sisters Aminata and Aissatan Tolo, Abdou Ouologuem and Ladji Barry, whose productions are articulated by manufacture on cotton fabric, basis of their work. The Tolo sisters, settled in Bamako, capital of Mali, embroider on the indigo cloth forms that refer to the values of their society of origin, Dogon. Abdou sculpted masks-vestments-fabrics from filled volumes of cotton yarn, a technique known as gaufrage, which attributes to an ancestral knowledge of the Tellem population. Ladji paints with natural medicinal pigments from the region, on which she adds volumes and embroidery with elements that refer to the rural world of hunters combined with materials tied to foreign and industrial. Combining a formal reading from the materials and forms present in the works, interviews with its producers, and information about the history of the cultural region, the research seeks to offer an interpretation of all the works. To this end, the research turns to the trajectory of the cultivation and processing of cotton, to the circulation and appropriation of the industrial fabric wax as cultural identity, and also to the production of bogolan, hand-woven fabric stamped with natural pigments that becomes symbol of the national textile art. To understand the spaces of performance of each artist within the Malayan art production scene, and its possible categorizations and hierarchizations, I support myself in Karin Barber\'s debate on \"The Popular Arts in Africa\", as well as in the research available in this document about the institutionalization of knowledge in Malian territory from a colonial system. To discuss the conditions of recognition of the production of these artists in the global art system, I bring the criticism, especially of the Cameroonian philosopher Achile Mbembe and the anthropologist Alfred Gell
