LA GÉOGRAPHIE DES TERRITOIRES GÉRONTOLOGIQUES

International audienceThe ageing of the population in France is indisputable since the proportion of older people in the total population has been increasing over the years. It is important, nevertheless, to point out the four factors of this ageing in order to understand how its intensity may differ according to the various territories, that is to say according to the different spaces, for example surrounded by administrative borders, which make up the national space. Such an analysis leads to the introduction of the notion of "gerontogrowth", in other words the increasing number of older people, to be distinguished from the process of ageing. However, present evolution as much as "geodemographic" forecasts show that ageing dynamics and "gerontogrowth" dynamics both have a dual geographic characteristic: on the one hand, taking into consideration a "departmental" territory for example, their evolution rhythm bears no resemblance and may sometimes even diverge, on the other hand, according to the territories, forecasts show extremely different evolution both for ageing and for "gerontogrowth". Consequently, geodemographic analysis shows how important it is to adapt gerotological policies to both new and extremely different geodemographic changes according to the territories.Le vieillissement de la population de la France est un fait incontestable, puisque la proportion des personnes âgées dans la population totale y augmente au fil des années. Néanmoins, il importe de préciser les quatre facteurs de ce vieillissement pour comprendre combien son intensité peut être différente selon les différents territoires, c'est-à-dire selon les différents espaces, délimités par exemple selon des périmètres administratifs, qui composent ensemble l'espace national. Une telle analyse conduit à introduire la notion de "gérontocroissance", c'est-à-dire d'augmentation du nombre des personnes âgées, à différencier du vieillissement. Or, tant l'évolution actuelle que les projections géodémographiques montrent que les dynamiques du vieillissement et de la gérontocroissance présentent une double caractéristique géographique: d'une part, considérant par exemple un territoire départemental, leur rythme d'évolution n'est absolument pas semblable et peut même parfois diverger, d'autre part, selon les territoires, les projections indiquent des évolutions extrêmement dissemblables tant pour le vieillissement que pour la gérontocroissance. L'analyse géodémographique enseigne en conséquence l'importance d'adapter les politiques gérontologiques à des changements géodémographiques à la fois inédits et extrêmement différents selon les territoires
