They left Austria right after "Kristallnacht" in November 1938 for Switzerland, France (Besançon, Perpignan, Marseille), Spain, and Portugal, arriving in the United States in July 1941. Margarete did not understand the political circumstances at the time, experiencing these three years as an extended vacation trip. In New York, she went to high school in Queens and acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree in early childhood education from Queens College. In the United States, Margaret Kohlhagen turned to orthodox Judaism, which resulted in conflicts with her assimilated parents.
