AHC Interview with Julie Schachter

The interview was conducted in Lakewood, NJ in the presence of Julie Schachter’s husband, David Schachter (AHC 1905), as well as her son and her stepdaughter.Julie Schachter, née Korn was born on December 25, 1925 in Deutschkreutz, Burgenland, Austria. She grew up in an orthodox family and held on to Jewish orthodoxy throughout her life. Julie Korn left Vienna on a Kindertransport to London. Her mother immigrated to the USA in 1940, but her father was deported to Poland where he died. In England, Julie Korn lived in Nottingham and then in Manchester with a German-Jewish woman who did not respect her orthodox lifestyle. Julie Korn came to New York on February 18, 1944 and started working as seamstress, initially in the business of a cousin.
