This PhD dissertation studies the relationship between women's labour mobility and especially temporary labour migration abroad and social norms at the level of the home community. The theoretical framework developed in chapters two and three is applied in the two following chapters to the mobility of Romanian women. The first chapter presents Romania's economical and social evolution since the fall of communism with a special focus on both external and internal mobility. The second chapter explains the migration decision in a unitary household model accounting for social norms.
