This thesis investigates four different economic issues related to international migration from a new perspective. The first novelty consists in looking at migration as a “gendered process”. Little research has indeed addressed the issue of female migration until the last decades. Women were largely invisible in migration studies. Statistics on female migration were absent and females were mostly viewed as dependents, moving as wives, mothers or daughters of male migrants. Using the newly released database on the gender dimension of respectively skilled (Chapter 1) and total (Chapter 2) migration we provide two important outcomes concerning female migration.
