As an introduction, we present the original formulation of the AdS/CFT correspondence, between N = 4 Super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(N) and type IIB string theory on AdS5 x S5. In a first part, we show how the ingredients of the AdS/CFT correspondence can be applied in a phenomenological way to study strongly correlated systems of fermions and present two fundamental models, the electron star and the holographic superconductor. We construct a holographic model for the study of Bose-Fermi systems at finite density and show that the simultaneous presence of bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom is favoured at zero temperature.
