Focusing on La chica del Sur (2012), a documentary film by José Luis García, a discussion about the meanings of the ‘South’ as a concept in Argentinian culture and elsewhere is offered. The film begins with a 1989 visit to North Korea and the electrifying presence of a young woman from South Korea, who has the utopian desire for peace and reunification. Twenty years later Garcia pursues the memory of that summer, the loss of youth, and he tries to understand how ideals, both collective and personal, have been transformed. The ‘South’ acts as a spur to a personal reflection that through film mixes geopolitics, personal crisis and poetry
