This study aims to analyse what can be gleaned from the writings ofthe Fathers of the IV-V centuries. Much material has been lost or cannot beretrieved. Special attention has been paid to the most important Fathers, giventhe difficulty in following each and every one of them systematically: JohnChrysostom, Eusebius of Caesarea, Jerome, Theodoret of Cyr. A high degreeof linguistic understanding can be seen at times as, for example, with Jeromewho took care to observe the Hebrew phonetics to bring out the literary beautyof the text of Isaiah.The centrality of Christ in the exegesis of the Fathers is highlighted. Andfrom this centrality there stands out the need to seek in the Scriptures theconfirmation of the details of the Passion
