As orbitelas de fio viscoso dao origem ao ramo mais diverso (Araneoidea) de Orbiculariae. Varias hipoteses foram levantadas para o aumento de diversidade de Araneoidea, mas nenhuma delas parece explicar completamente o fenomeno.
