130,670 Hoosiers served in the military during WWI. Men who volunteered for service could choose what they wanted to do. Those drafted were assigned to units by the military. After training at Ft. Harrison the men were sent to New York for further training and then sailed to France. Travelling in convoys, the trip took about 14 days. The men wore life jackets the entire time and slept in bunks built in five tiers. Some were seasick during the entire time
