Development of an intervention for children with a mild intellectual disability of parents with a mental illness (COPMI)

Contains fulltext : 158372.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access)Aim: To date no intervention is available for children with mild intellectual disabilities (ID) of parents with a mental illness or substance use disorder, despite the strong relation between parental psychopathology and ID in children. Moreover, research has shown that mild ID combined with parental psychopathology make these children particularly vulnerable to developing problems themselves. Therefore, the aim is to adapt and test an evidence-based support group intervention for children of parents with mental illness (COPMI; Van Santvoort, 2013) to the needs of children with mild ID. In this contribution we present the first results of a pilot study. Methods: The existing COPMI intervention of eight sessions is currently being adjusted by a working group consisting of clinicians and clients. Through a pre-test post-test design, qualitative and quantitative data will be collected from an experimental group (n = 6) and control group (n = 6) of children with mild ID, aged 10-14 years. Client experiences with COPMI, social support, negative cognitions about parent (s) and perceived competence will be assessed. Results: Results will be presented.
