Prevention as a building block in developing a progamme for people with mild ID with mental health problems

Contains fulltext : 72795.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access)Aim: In the current research a determinants analysis is executed, whereby factors are exposed that significantly more often occur with children with mild intellectual disability (MID) and behaviour problems than with children with MID without behaviour problems. xx Method : The random test used for the research consists of 45 students in the age group 12 – 16 years descending from special schools; data with reference to determinants are collected with respect to the students, their parents and their teachers. With the help of the SDQ questionnaires the research sample was divided in one group with and one group without behaviour problems. xx Results: Parents of students with behaviour problems indicate more often negative occurrences, feel less competent, feel more social isolation and are less satisfied about their relationship with their partner than parents with students without behaviour problems. Above that, characteristics of students with behaviour problems in the area of adaptation, disposition, distractibility, exactingness, positive affirmation, and acceptation, contribute to the total stress in the child–parent relationship. xx Conclusions: Parents have a clear need for help, and the results offer as a consequence starting points to develop preventive interventions. In the discussion suggestions will be given for follow-up study; prevention activities will be adjusted and examined on effectiveness.1 p
