The oldest rocks in the Mt Morgan area of central Queensland belong to the lower subdivision of the Capella Creek beds. These beds span the australis conodont zone of middle Eifelian age and were intruded by the Mt Morgan Tonalite, to which they are genetically related. Both the Capella Creek beds and the Mt Morgan Tonalite were overlain unconformably by the Dee Volcanics during the Frasnian (377–367 Ma). An unconformity between the Mt Morgan Tonalite and the Dee Volcanics is exposed some 750 m southwest of the Mt Morgan open cut
