McCutcheon moved to Chicago after graduation from college and began work in the art department for the Chicago Morning News (later the Record). In 1895 he was promoted and began drawing front page cartoons for the paper. His love for travel served him well as he was assigned as a war correspondent covering Boer and Philippine Wars as well as World War I. The illustration depicting the fighting in the Philippines was drawn in 1898. McCutcheon spent 4 years covering the Philippine insurrection. His early works tended to be more realistic.Handwritten at top of drawing: Please fill in all these sketches & sign name - haven't time to finish.Destination Indiana - John T.
