Progress had been made in the early 1900s by researchers growing the polio virus in cell cultures. This work opened the door for Dr. Jonas E. Salk at the University of Pittsburgh. He developed a method of attacking the virus with formaldehyde, leaving it intact enough to cause a response in humans. Demonstration of its effectiveness was accomplished in 1954. This vaccine showed promise, but further testing was needed.Use of this image is restricted to projects related to Destination Indiana.
