Fear of poliomyelitis, or infantile paralysis, has long haunted mankind. The disease is known to have existed in ancient Egypt. In 1789, a British physician first described poliomyelitis. In 1952, an polio epidemic swept through the United States devastating results. Some 57,000 cases were reported, with 3,000 deaths and 21,000 victims left paralyzed. Without a cure, these numbers would continue to repeat themselves in the years that followed.Use of this image is restricted to projects related to Destination Indiana.
