Traffic safety is a globally pressing matter, as traffic accidents are one the most common causes of fatalities worldwide. Intelligent transportation systems offer modern solutions for improving traffic safety. In this thesis, a proof-of-concept roadside unit is presented which is capable of improving traffic safety in occluded intersection areas. The unit consists of a camera and a single-board computer equipped with 4G connection. Road users are detected with computer vision and their locations are acquired with a monovision algorithm. The locations are sent to a server, from which connected vehicles can poll the location data when approaching the intersection.
