This study was composed of three parts. The first part involved the extension of an existing transient two dimensional numerical code for an electrothermal deicer so that it would simulate the situation where a variable thickness ice layer existed at the outer surface. The Enthalpy Method was used to simulate the phase change, and Gauss-Seidel iteration was used to solve the resulting system of finite difference equations. A set of criteria were developed for determining when a variable thickness ice layer had an effect on deicer performance. The second part was the acquisition and analysis of experimental data.
