Letter from John Muir to [Bailey] Millard, [1909 ? Oct].

Martinez, Cal. Oct. 28, 1909Dear Mr Millard: My work through the last half dozen years has been interrupted in so many ways scarce anything worth while has been done. After my delightful camping trip with President Roosevelt I set out as you know on a long trip abroad. seeing something of Europe Siberia, Manchuria, the Caucasus Japan, India, Egypt, Ceylon, Australia & New Zealand & the Philippines. I most enjoyed the Caucasus, Himalaya, & the wonderful forests of Australia New Zealand & the Philippines.It\u27s not true that any of the 200 or more species of Eucalyptus surpass our Sequoias in height or even come with 30 or 40 feet of equaling them, especially the Redwood I failed to find a botanist in all Australia who claimed to have seen or measured a single specimen more than 300 feet high.One of the greatest interruptions in my regular work has been & is the fight is in defense of Hetch Hetchy Valley against several San Francisco people who are trying to make it a water tank for the use of the City. The fight will go on in the next session of Congress I hope you can help in saving this Tuolumne Yosemite one of the grandest & most useful features of the Park & belonging to the whole Nation.My trip with President Taft was altogether delightful. He was most appreciative & enthusiastic especially in Yosemite & the groves of the Mariposa Sequoias & while riding through the glorious sugar pine & silver fir forests. Doubtless he will prove a faithful wholesouled friend in every way of this greatest of all our mountain parks.
