Made in Africa : production and consumption of African red slip ware in Late Antiquity

English Abstract “Made in Africa” is dedicated to the information on production and consumption encapsulated in a single sherd labeled ‘African Red Slip Ware’ by archaeologists. This PhD thesis focuses on the identification of different Tunisian production centers by applying standardized fabric description – an archaeological method to classify pottery according to the microscopic features of the sherd. It records the variation in ‘African Red Slip Ware’ fabric types in selected Central and Western Mediterranean ceramic assemblages, aiming at the reconstruction of the wider economic mechanisms lying behind the established consumption patterns. Nederlandse Samenvatting "Made in Africa" onderzoekt de informatie over productie en consumptie die vervat zit in elke scherf die door archeologen van het label ‘African Red Slip Ware’ is voorzien. Deze dissertatie richt zich op de identificatie van verschillende Tunesische productiecentra op basis van een gestandaardiseerde bakselbeschrijving - een archeologische methode om aardewerk te classificeren aan de hand van de microscopische kenmerken van de scherf. Hierdoor wordt de variatie in ‘African Red Slip Ware’-bakseltypen in geselecteerde Centraal- en Westmediterrane keramiekassemblages zichtbaar, wat toelaat bredere economische mechanismen te reconstrueren die ten grondslag liggen aan de vastgestelde consumptiepatronen
