De nos jours, les lasers impulsionnels et en particulier les lasers femtosecondes sont d'un grand intérêt pour les applications photoniques. En effet, en focalisant les impulsions au sein de matériaux transparents, l'énergie se trouve déposée et confinée dans le volume focal provoquant alors une modification locale de l'indice de réfraction ( ∆n) par le biais de processus non-linéaires. Selon la dose accumulée et l'énergie de l'impulsion, il est possible d'induire des variations d'indice positives et isotropes (Type I) ou de fortes variations d'indice négatives et anisotropes (Type II).
