Letter from Helen [Muir] to [John Muir], [1908 ?] Mar 19.

[1]Daggett, Cal. Mar. 19 -Dear Papa -This is another warm morning, with the birds singing. I have been busy in my little new garden. Dick has fixed the ditch so I can turn the water in and run it clear around the house and easily water all the plants. Ive done only the very easiest work, just putting the plants in the ground and watering them, and it dont tire me a bit. Its fine healthy work for me. Im feeling fine. Mrs Funk sweeps my shanty. I drink lots of milk, all thro\u27 the day, and a pint of new milk just before I go to bed.The fine purple iris blossom you sent with the the plants was fresh and beautiful when I took it out. It kept pretty, in water, for two days after.04113 [2]When is Wanda thinking of coming to see me?The ranch looks fine and green now. And the cottonwoods are out in full leaf. It has been 85° in the north shade every afternoon for a week now.Yesterday I saw Mr Tuttle, the division Superintendent, who is now at Needles. He used to be [Train?]master at Fresno. It was he who gave us permision to ride on the engine down from Stockton that time. He asked very kindly for you and wished to be rememebred and said if we ever wanted anything to let him know.I have been thinking that the double Cherokee rose would probably grow here. I want to try it anyway, it would make a rose bower of my shanty if I could just get it started. Please send me a root. Also two honeysuckle roots.04113 [3]I didnt think of them before, but I feel sure I can make them grow if I take good care of them.My little kitty is growing, and feels jolly, plays all over the shanty.
