Obwohl imaginäre Gefährten vergleichsweise häufig im Kindes- und Jugendalter zu beobachten sind, liegt bislang nur wenig systematische Forschung zur Funktion und Bedeutung dieses Phänomens vor. Überlegungen zur Psychopathologie stehen im Vordergrund. Der vorliegende Beitrag gibt zunächst einen Überblick über den Forschungsstand und stellt fünf verschiedene Funktionen dar, die imaginäre Gefährten im Leben von Kindern und Jugendlichen haben können. Er arbeitet dann wesentliche entwicklungspsychologische Veränderungen im Kindes- und Jugendalter heraus, die verdeutlichen, daß in den einzelnen Altersstufen unterschiedlich gute Voraussetzungen für die Konstruktion eines imaginären Gefährten vorliegen.
