Convolution is the basic operation behind many image processing algorithms. However, it is a computationally intensive operation. Dedicated hardware exists to implement the fixed-point version of this operation. But recent developments such as laser range data processing now require floating-point arithmetic which is often performed by software.This thesis presents the design of a specialized convolution processor that operates on double precision floating-point data. This convolver is based on an array of systolic cells and may be configured to process both images and unidimensional signals.
