Note:At twenty years old, Johannes Brahms met Robert and Clara Schumann for the first time in 1853. Brahms’ piano sonatas came to be known as “Veiled Symphonies” or “Verschleierte Symphonien” when soon after their introduction, Robert Schumann published an article lauding Brahms’ talent. This article was titled “Neue Bahnen,” and had lasting implications on Brahms’ career. Schumann’s grand interpretation of Brahms’ first works created a paradox, as they would forever be associated with two different mediums of composition.
