This document deals with one of the most problematic piano works of the nineteenth century, and certainly one of Robert Schumann\u27s most labored compositional efforts, the Symphonic Etudes, Opus 13. The work underwent eighteen years of evolution, from its composition beginning in 1834 to its second published version in 1852. Schumann referred to the work by at least eight different titles during his life. Indeed, Symphonic Etudes has continued to have a troubled history even after his death. Clara Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and many others have left their sometimes controversial marks on its publication and numerous editions.
