Until recently the oxidation of gaseous compounds has been thought to be a predominantly heterogeneous process. It is now known that practically all these reactions proceed by a chain mechanism. A large number of investigations have been made recently on reactions of this sort, (1), (2), and the general conclusions drawn from them are given below. (1) All these redctionsproceed by a chain mechanism, the termination of the chains being either in the gas or at the wall.
