Heterogeneity is at the heart of Darwin's "mystery of mysteries", the origin of species, as both cause and consequence. Heterogeneity within and between environments can lead to genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity within and between populations. This can lead, in turn, to heterogeneity in patterns of mating and reproduction, often called "non-random" or "assortative" mating. Ultimately, this process can lead to speciation – in essence, the development of stable, persistent heterogeneity at the phylogenetic level.
